Season 75, Episode 05 – “Long Marston 2”
With more than a hundred miles of canals, Warwickshire’s waterways are a kaleidoscope of colour. Canal art adorns many of the county’s narrowboats, bringing vivid splashes of greens, reds and yellows to its towpaths. Presenter Caroline Hawley meets heritage crafter Kerri Williams, who specialises in preserving this traditional art form. Kerri runs workshops teaching the art and helping students to understand the social history behind it. In nearby Long Marston, two generations of antiques hunters search high and low for bargains to take to auction. In red are mum and daughter Bekki and Paisley, and in blue are mum and son Francine and Richard. With 60 minutes on the clock, the reds’ tails are wagging when they spot a vintage ceramic bulldog that is identical to one in a well-known spy movie. However, when expert David Fergus sees the price tag, he says they’re barking up the wrong tree. Meanwhile, the blue team and their expert, Thomas Forrester, find a soapstone sculpture of a lion, but sadly its condition is far from ‘purrfect’. In Bristol, the bidders are in a generous mood when auctioneer Andy Stowe starts selling the teams’ lots – but who’s going home with cash in their hands?
