More than 150 of the country’s best young musicians take us on a metaphorical musical journey to the underworld and back under the watchful eye of conductor and composer Thomas Adès. Always a hotly anticipated highlight of any BBC Proms season, the National Youth Orchestra is at the Royal Albert Hall with a programme that opens with Liszt’s intoxicating Mephisto Waltz No 1, a whirlwind score following the Faust legend as he waltzes out into the forest with a local village girl. Next up is a rare treat of a new piece conducted by the composer himself: Purgatorio–Dante ballet Part II is Thomas Adès’s contemplation of purgatory in this central act of his Grammy Award-winning ballet. To round off the concert, the orchestra delivers the dazzling Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz. A vast young orchestra drenches the Royal Albert Hall in this mesmerising symphony. Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

Nick Mohammed presents the Proms debut of the Spanish National Orchestra from the Royal Albert Hall. Under chief conductor David Afkham, the orchestra performs music inspired by Spain, from Ravel’s mesmerising Boléro, evoking the Spanish dance of the same name, to Rodrigo’s beloved Concierto de Aranjuez, which depicts the royal gardens south of Madrid, with acclaimed Spanish guitarist Rafael Aguirre as soloist. The concert also features the sun-drenched dances of Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat, capturing the heat and vibrant dance rhythms of Andalusia. Nick is joined by Strictly Come Dancing star Janette Manrara to celebrate the Latin dance rhythms that run through the evening’s music.

e Figaro called him a ‘new cello genius’. Now prize-winning Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández makes his Proms debut with Elgar’s achingly passionate concerto. He joins Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a programme that measures out the griefs, conflicts and shifting identities of the 20th century – opening with Webern’s lushly Romantic 1908 Passacaglia, whose sequence of intricate variations finds a ghostly echo in the finale of Walton’s Second Symphony. Premiered in 1960, the latter work looks back rather than forwards, rejecting the avant-garde in favour of a dense, Expressionistic intensity.

The Sinfonia of London transcend in a programme brimming with colourful orchestration under the baton of their ever-popular artistic director, John Wilson. Opening with Verdi’s thunderous overture to La Forza del Destino, followed by Norwegian cellist Jonathan Aasgaard in his Proms soloist debut with Walton’s hypnotic Cello Concerto and finishing with the music time capsule that is Respighi’s enchanting sun-drenched Roman Trilogy.
